Meeting 9/23 - SAGES & Contraception

wefordham:

Last tuesday (wow I need to start posting these sooner in the week oh well) we had our first academic/discussion-style meeting of the semester. It was facilitated by Rachel D who made a beautiful powerpoint which can be found right here.

Here is a non-exhaustive list of body parts we would like…

ampersandvagabond:

Here we are again, my friends. How I’ve missed you all. It’s time to dust off your creative cobwebs and get this thing a-rollin’.

A big thank you to the lovely people who submitted their work this month. The deadline for next month’s issue is October 15th, so send your (spooky) submissions to ampersand.vagabond@gmail.com if you’d like to see them included.

Shout out to John “Dagger John” Hughes for letting us crash at his place for the night!

I couldn’t take pix of the meeting (my phone ran out of memory b/c of Bono), so here’s a picture of jdjh I found on the googly moogly:

This also showed up

Anyway, tonight’s prompt was setting as character. I brought up East of Eden by Steinbeck, because it rocks and the Salinas Valley has a distinct personality and role in the novel. I challenged y’all to challenge yourselves to explore the personalities of places, and how they effect us.

I hope you guys continue what you started tonight. And all the folks at home, order some Panda XXXpress & give this prompt a try.

xx Prez Ali

p.s. send your cool/finished pieces ready for zine-ing to Emily at ampersand.vagabond@gmail.com, & stuff you want to workshop to fordham.ampersand@gmail.com. We’ll add it to the queue.

Thanx to everyone who came to our first meeting!

Special thanx for chilling in the heat.

Our prompt was six word stories.

Try it out on your own if you couldn’t make it. Try it out again even if you could, and did.

It’s gr8 to exercise the art of distilling your thoughts. It WILL improve your poetry or prose.

Check out these dope 6-word-stories by famou$ authors after the jump!

Found true love. Married someone else.

-David Eggers

-Margaret Atwood

-Jeffrey Eugenides

“I think we ought to read only the kind of books that wound and stab us. If the book we’re reading doesn’t wake us up with a blow on the head, what are we reading it for? So that it will make us happy, as you write? Good Lord, we would be happy precisely if we had no books, and the kind of books that make us happy are the kind we could write ourselves if we had to. But we need the books that affect us like a disaster, that grieve us deeply, like the death of someone we loved more than ourselves, like being banished into forests far from everyone, like a suicide. A book must be the axe for the frozen sea inside us. That is my belief.”

—

20-year-old Franz Kafka

Happy birthday, love.

SCHOOL’S OUT 4 SUMMER but that doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in the cool, sweet, red dye #40 artificially colored drippings of a good book.
So tweet at us at @fuampersand and tell us what books you’re lovin’ this summer and see what your other amperpals are reading by the pool side.
Also, when you’re taking a break from the MISCELLANEOUS WILD BEACH PARTIES and getting THE SICKEST AIR OF YOUR LIFE on the WATER CRAFT OF YOUR CHOICE, I hope you CRAZY CATS are working on some GNARLY pieces to submit to THE VAGABOND (WICKED) and possibly the FALL 2014 AMPERSAND (OH MAN) this coming semester (WHAT). In the mean time, boogie down with a nice piece of literature!!

ampersandvagabond:

Well here we are again, friends. Another issue of the Vagabond fresh off the digital printing press.

The Vagabond makes for a great conversation topic at Easter brunch! Everyone young and old loves it! Definitely! Trust me!

This issue has:

  • Festive Bunnies
  • Soup
  • Existentialism
  • A Dead thing
  • Words like “pandemonium” and “noodles”
  • No mention of your Aunt Cheryl’s freeloader ex-husband, so she hopefully won’t go into a rant that ruins Easter dinner like last year.
  • AND MUCH MORE!!!

ANOTHER DELICIOUS EDITION

THIS IS NOT YOUR GRANDMA’S VAGABOND

SO YOU SHOULD PRINT ONE OUT AND GIVE ONE TO HER

ampersandvagabond:

Presenting the March 2014 Vagabond for your reading pleasure. Its loving embrace will keep you warm until the sun decides to get its act together. Fear not, it will be frisbee throwing weather soon. Until then, toss this issue of The Vagabond across the lawn to your friends. Maybe print it out first. And maybe don’t throw it. Gently hand it to your friends.

The Vagabond is my favorite flavor.

But wait, there’s more!

Introducing Snippets. I was going to call it Clippings but snippets is a much funnier word.

Special thanks to the paper and The Fordham Ram. Go check them out.

This collage features excerpts from Fordham’s very own the paper and The Fordham Ram. Go check them out. They do good work.

Everybody knows that when push comes to shove, nothing feels better than feeling the love.
